As far back as Kat can remember she has been drawn to animals. She worked her way up from goldfish, to hamsters, bunnies, and finally an orange long haired green eyed cat. As a teenager she became a vegetarian and has been vegan for the animals for the past decade. As an adult she took any chance she could to be around animals, particularly dogs. In her mid-twenties she got her first dog as a three month old pup and thereafter began her complete love affair with everything dog!
In October 2012 she lost that dog to cancer at 10 years old and realized how quickly time flies. She had been working in a field she fell into, but that didn’t fulfill her and she decided this needed to change. She had boarded numerous dogs for friends and neighbours and been given house keys for “emergency” dog walks. It was something she really enjoyed. She also took in a couple of foster dogs who she was able to resocialize and who ended up getting rehomed. She realized dogs were her passion and the direction she should go in.
She visited a local shelter that November to get some information on volunteering and fostering since she found herself without a dog of her own. Just before she was about to leave she saw a dark brown dog with white markings whose eyes had such a sweet but intense soulfulness. The information posted about him “1yr old male, good with dogs” and boy that was an understatement! She adopted him shortly after and soon realized he was a dogs dog who loved to play and run with other dogs.
They completed group obedience and clicker training classes, obtained a Canadian Kennel Club Good Canine Citizen certification, and passed a TPOC therapy dog evaluation. Importantly they completed their first of several Pet First Aid courses and both received their certification! (Kats dog received a certificate for being a cooperative and patient First Aid Model. So proud!).
